Dr. Fabio Rubio Scarano

Fabio Scarano graduated in Forest Engineering from the University of Brasilia and obtained his PhD in Ecology from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. He is Associate Professor of Ecology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro since 1993. He is also a member of the Linnean Society of London (since 1995) and was Visiting Professor at the Universities of Darmstadt, Germany (2002), and Minnesota, USA (2003) . In the Brazilian government, he served at CAPES, MEC (2005-2011) and was Scientific Director of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, MMA (2007-2009). In this role, he helped create the National Flora Conservation Center (CNCFlora) in 2008. In the third sector, he was Executive Director of the Brazilian Foundation for Sustainable Development (2015-2018) and Executive Director of the Brazil program (2009-2011) and then Senior Vice President of the Americas Division (2011-2015) at Conservation International. In the private sector, he worked in forest sector companies in Minas Gerais (1986-1988). He was an author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2011-2014), on the Brazilian Panel on Climate Change (PBMC, 2011-2014), was chapter coordinator on the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES, 2015-2018) and he is general coordinator of the Brazilian platform on this topic (BPBES, since 2015). He supervised around 40 masters and doctors. He has over 100 scientific publications and was awarded the Jabuti Prize for two of his books.
