Line of Research: Socio-technological systems
Sergio Margulis holds a degree in Mathematics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1977), a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA, 1981) and a PhD in Environmental Economics from Imperial College London (1988). He was Secretary for Sustainable Development at the Secretariat for Strategic Affairs of the Presidency of the Republic (2013-2015); Special Advisor to the Minister of the Environment (2012-2013); environmental economist at the World Bank in Washington DC between 1990 and 2012, President of FEEMA (formerly INEA, 1995-1996) and researcher at IPEA (1980-1990). He is currently a Senior Research Associate at the International Institute for Sustainability and WayCarbon. Throughout his career, he developed studies on several environmental topics, including deforestation in the Amazon, urban pollution management, water resources management, environmental valuation and climate change. Currently, he has concentrated his work in the area of adaptation to climate change.
